Elliot Calvin Nemeth
Our firstborn son came into this world at the turn of the millennium (as the world brought in Y2K, I was having a labor pain), and was named after two men of God: John Calvin and Jim Elliot (and dare I claim a 3rd: Jeff Nemeth!) Calvin was a theologian. This may be a bit stereotypical, but I imagine him as a bookworm with a good laugh, who loved to think. He emphasized through his writings a very important thing: that God is in control. He is at work in the world, and we do well to pay attention to that. I like that about Calvin; he knew who the “pilot” was.
Jim Elliot was a missionary to the First Nations people of South America. From the time he was a young man, he was passionately committed to doing whatever God required of him. He was willing to go to the jungles; he was willing to risk his neck to love First Nations people to Jesus. Today there is a thriving indigenous church where he was murdered by the same people he had come to love. Love triumphs, and his reckless passion for Creator and complete obedience to Him is the perfect balance to Calvin’s theology.
Our prayer is that Elliot will become a devoted, obedient servant of the One who is in control of it all anyway.
Also, when I became pregnant with Elliot, Jeff named him “Kingdom Rebuilder” (he was convinced we were having a boy). Nehemiah was a rebuilder and a great leader. We see leadership ability in Elliot, and we pray that he will be a leader of integrity, in whatever capacity God wills.
Elliot is Mr. Enthusiasm. He gets excited easily, and his enjoyment of life is contagious. He is also a very talkative guy, and enjoys interacting with people of all ages. He is very creative, loves to play cars, and is currently enthused about anything that has to do with outer space and oceans/rivers/etc.
